Description: These three aphorisms describe the conundrum of knowledge-it clearly is not a straightforward concept. Nevertheless, the medical enterprise has invented a stamp of 'unquestionable knowledge', namely that based on evidence, and in particular that one derived from the randomised controlled trial and/or meta-analysis. In this chapter, we will outline some of the conceptual issues underlying the notion of knowledge, offer a complexity based understanding of knowledge, and highlight some of the implications of a complex understanding of knowledge for the practice of medicine.
