- Cinema in India has been a transformative medium in the critique and negotiation of tradition and modernity. Cinema and the city have been prime sites in the visualization and construction of individual and collective identities. This paper surveys the complex connection between film images and the city of Delhi, with a particular emphasis on the staging of private and public spaces. Films through imaginings of city and spaces, and locations within the city capture and critique the historical transformations of Delhi through time. Indian cinema has become an ideal medium to understand commentary and critique of popular Indian culture. The cinematic projections of city spaces are undertaken for collective consumption that shape and are shaped by the internal and external gaze, and the city becomes a site of negotiation in construction of individual and collective identities. Films representative of two periods of development (state and global led) such as; New Delhi (1956) and Householder (1963), Delhi-6 (2009) and Delhi Belly (2011) provide commentary on the cultural imaginings of city, its internal and external spaces and the postcolonial transformations in Indian culture through cinematic representations of city and its characters. The paper deploys these films to analyze architectural, symbolic and social spatial narratives of Delhi that reproduce the city for local and global audiences.
