- From an educational perspective there are many benefits to be derived from site visits for students studying built environment topics. Unfortunately increasing levels of risk aversion among building site operators and education providers conspire to make them problematic if not impossible. Furthermore, for providers of distance education programs that combine delivery to on campus and distance learning students, issues of equity in educational experience require educators to provide the same learning opportunities across the entire cohort, which is practically impossible given the tyranny of distance. The use of virtual environments within which to conduct virtual site visits is not new but the successful re-use of BIMs for this purpose is in its infancy, particularly where user interaction with elements of the model is required. One particular approach is to strip out the essential information from the BIM and export it into a game engine: this provides both an accurate representation of the finished building together with functionality that allows freedom of movement and the potential to use basic tools - such as measuring instruments - within the environment. The development to date of such a tool is described herein, together with the design of, and findings from a "proof of concept" evaluation of its essential features.
