- Description
- The issue of providing students of subjects in the built environment with real-world experiences is a well understood teaching and learning strategy, used to ground theory in an on-site context. Unfortunately it is equally well understood by teachers and construction site staff that this exercise is fraught with risk: safety and liability are foremost in everyone's mind, with educational outcomes relegated to a secondary consideration. The introduction of blended delivery and distance learners only serves to compound the matter. Against this backdrop the development of virtual site visit technology and its introduction to various built environment curriculums would appear to be a welcome initiative. This paper provides preliminary reports on a pilot deployment of such a mechanism, including reflection upon curriculum development, user experiences and educational effectiveness.
