- The ARCS was developed as a medium length cognitive battery that, by virtue of its novel means of administration, can also serve as a screening test. The ARCS includes tests of episodic verbal memory, verbal fluency, language (object naming), visuospatial ability, and attention/executive functioning that are administered via an audio device (e.g. MP3 player, CD player, computer). The patient (or study participant) writes their responses to the questions in a booklet for later scoring. A preamble on the audio provides a clear and simple explanation as to how testing will be conducted. Testing lasts 34 minutes and is unsupervised. Patients who score 18/30 or more on the Mini Mental State Examination are typically able to complete testing with the ARCS. The time-cost to the clinician for obtaining the results is minimal: about two minutes to set the patient up with the audio and response booklet and about 2-4 minutes for scoring into the accompanying excel spreadsheet scoring calculator. The calculator converts raw scores into demographically adjusted scores and also serves as a database. The current chapter reviews our experience with the ARCS, highlighting its flexibility, and discusses its potential use in a range of clinical and research settings.
