- Green tea refers to non-oxidised tea and it is an abundant source of catechins, which have been found to have strong antioxidant activities. Recent epidemiological, in vitro and in vivo laboratory studies have linked catechins with the chemoprevention of certain types of cancers. In addition, green tea is also a rich source of theanine, which has also been linked with cancer chemoprevention and has been found to reduce the adverse effects of cancer chemotherapy with agents such as doxorubicin. Among the various types of cancers, pancreatic cancer has received considerable attention lately because it is the fourth leading cause of cancer death and it has a dismal 5-year survival rate of less than 5%. In addition, pancreatic cancer has been found to be largely resistant to conventional therapeutic strategies. Several attempts have been made to study the link between green tea polyphenols and pancreatic cancer. Therefore, this chapter describes the properties, putative roles and plausible mechanisms of action for the main green tea components in relation to cancer chemoprevention and reviews the recent findings linking green tea and pancreatic cancer chemoprevention.
