Description: The internal environment of the body normally remains in a relatively constant or homeostatic state. One of the easiest ways to reflect on the nursing roles necessary when looking after a person with renal insufficiency is to consider the functions of the kidney and then consider how it is that we support the loss of those functions. The kidneys help maintain homeostasis by regulating the composition and volume of extracellular fluid. They excrete excess water and solutes and conserve water and solutes when deficits occur. The kidneys also help regulate acid-base balance and they excrete metabolic wastes. Regulation of blood pressure is also a key function of the kidneys (see Table 29.1).
