- Dust control is a major concern in many industries worldwide. The topic is highly valued in Australia due to extensive mining activities where bulk materials handling is heavily involved. Free falling of bulk materials is common in the materials handling chain, with the adjacent air surrounding the free falling stream being induced into the stream of bulk material. This leads to the generation of dust upon compaction of the stream. Better understanding of the way air is induced into the stream of bulk material, and the quantity of the entrained air, will assist in the design of more efficient dust control systems. In this paper the interaction between the particles and the air in disperse streams is reviewed. A series of physical experiments has been carried out using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) to measure the fluid velocity. The experimental program was conducted to classify the effect of particle diameter and particle density independently. Furthermore, each experiment was simulated in Ansys CFX. This paper presents several distinct sections that detail the experimental and simulation results as well as a comparison of these two methods while also including a discussion of existing theory.
