- Mucinous ovarian carcinoma (MOC) is a rare (< 5%) form of ovarian carcinoma (Clement and Young 2014). While the age range of MOC is wide, it occurs at a younger mean age than the much more common serous cancers and, in the rare instance, when ovarian cancer occurs in a child, it is most commonly MOC (Clement and Young 2014). Th e pathogenesis of MOC is unknown, particularly as mucinous cells are rarely seen in the non-neoplastic ovary (Clement and Young 2004). Perhaps the best clue to the pathogenesis of MOC is its co-location with its presumed precursors mucinous borderline ovarian tumour (M-BOT) and benign mucinous cystadenoma.
