- An Australian newspaper headlines "Distressed property assets may top $50bn" (Chong, 2010) the article goes further by stating that the figure may be as high as $100bn! Daunting words in a period of history now to be known as the Global Financial Crisis. In Newcastle Australia alone there have been a number of developments that have fallen into this category. These projects have been extensively reported by the local media. Furthermore, these particular projects have taken a considerable time to complete beyond their designated contractual completion date and at a considerable cost. This paper will highlight some of the findings from an initial survey of stakeholder interviews and their direct involvement with these projects. This survey also highlights major rework undertaken on these projects to bring them into line with acceptable building standards and finishes. The structure of the survey has been designed to extract information in relation to initial management practices of design, project, procurement and financial management as well as cultural implications.
