- 600 million mobile phone users in China daily use their mobile phones to engage with social media, whilst a similar number use the internet. In 2014 China is poised to become the world's largest economy, overtaking the United States of America. Understanding the Chinese culture within the modern context of social media for foreign businesses is increasingly important. With an internet penetration rate of only 46%, the growth potential for China's e-commerce markets is staggering. By examining the use of the mobile phone application WeChat (Weixίn) as a case study during the 2014 Chinese Lunar New Year festival, this paper explores how traditional collectivist values of Chinese society are emerging online. We argue that social media is supporting China's traditional values by virtually linking a vast collectivist society.
