- This paper would extend previous studies on cable vibration to further studies on sagging cable oscillation attached with viscous damper with the bridge deck motion effect on the system damping performance concerned in terms of both free and forced vibration. The vibration of the sagging cable with the attached viscous damper subjected to vertical deck motion was formulated analytically as a complex eigenvalue problem. Then cable damping, cable inclination, cable and damper stiffness, damper location and coupling interactions of cable, deck and damper were fully investigated through the newly created model by making comparisons to the damping systems with different parametric values and interaction modes. Subsequently a series of practical optimization curves for the suppression of cable oscillation were developed and the previously used uncoupled cable-damper model with some important parameters neglected was effectively improved. The results obtained from this research would thus serve as a theoretical base for the application of parameters optimization to minimize cable oscillation in cable-damper damping system.
