According to the author, the Classical views of Alderman Morris Light, Newcastle's mayor in 1924-25, are revealed in the architecture of city structures such as the Civic Complex, Town Hall, and Civic Theater. The author discusses Greek, Roman and Egyptian elements in the construction of the Town Hall's tower and Civic Theater's statues. Special attention is paid to Light's impression of the architecture of Durban, South Africa, and its connection with his vision for Newcastle.
