- Film distributors today find themselves in a world where consumers access media in a radically different way than in decades past. For the major studios or the smallest production company, the need to harness the web as a film sales and delivery platform is ever more vital. The internet has been celebrated for enabling independent and ‘previously marginalised or under-represented voices to be heard by wider audiences’, while also being characterized as the evil domain of ‘pirates’.1 For niche independent film economies without access to cinematic exhibition, the primary distribution channels are online DVD sales and internet download/streaming, and sites hosting or linking to copyright-infringing files are their biggest competitors. This report uses lesbian-focused film distribution – a small and relatively discrete global industry – as a lens through which to view the ways in which independent distributors and producers are releasing films for sale on the web. By examining the (legal and illegal) availability of lesbian-themed films online, geoblocking restrictions placed upon products for sale, and relative costs and ease of searching, it is clear that this small film industry is limiting opportunities for growth by adhering to the online distribution norms of Hollywood.
