- In this study the drivers for recycling of phosphorus from wastewater treatment plants is considered in light of projected future demand and production estimates and current phosphorus flows for Australia. It was estimated that 43 ktP/y of phosphorus is present in the raw effluent which represents 8% of the total annual flow of 535 ktP/y. About 2/3 of the effluent phosphorus already has beneficial use on depleted soils. There is capacity to increase this practice for both biosolids and recycled water streams, and will reduce the demand for fertiliser produced from posphate rock. At present, it is unlikely that further refinement of effluent streams to generate a high grade phosphorus product will be commercially viable given readily available alternative feedstocks and current demand-to-production ratio.
