- Description
- The contribution of spirituality to children's resilience, agency, and occupational engagement is a neglected area of occupational therapy knowledge. Marginalized children have had limited opportunities to voice their understanding of themselves, and how they wish to be supported in their lives. This chapter explores spirituality's presence in contributing to the resilience of these children through qualities such as hope, trust, and faith from philosophical, theoretical, and research perspectives. Children's connections to their own dreams and desires, to others, to nature and to meaningful cultural experiences all contribute to giving children a sense of purpose and meaning in an often difficult world. As occupational therapists we need to be mindful of the expression of spirituality in the lives of marginalized children, so we can connect with and assist them in ways that have meaning and power for each of them, in the communities, societies, and world in which they live.
