Description: In their preface to the book, the esteemed authors note they have had nearly a century of experience in the field of addiction, in clinical psychology and social work, and it shows! The book is written for both generalists and specialists to provide an evidence-based foundation for helping people with addictive disorders. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1, ‘An Invitation to Addiction Treatment’, comprises three chapters covering reasons for treating addiction, definitions of addiction and how drugs work. These chapters covered the foundations of addiction nicely—comprehensive information was given while, at the same time, encouraging the reader to learn more. The importance of the topic, given its prevalence, impact and treatability, was clearly communicated and would make sense to novice and experienced practitioners.
