- Description
- This chapter is designed to provide students of HRM with a brief introduction to employment relations as it is structured an practiced in Australia. Employment relations (ER) is fundamental to both the practice and the study of human resource management (HRM), although this is not always obvious. In some organisations, ER is a relatively specialist area, knowledge of which rounds out a HR manager's practitioner skill set. However, in other organisations ER is a core activity, essential day-to-day operations and to the initiation and sustainability of workplace change. In more theoretical terms, ER introduces students of HRM to different concepts and ways of thinking and to broader contextual factors that impact on the organisation.
