- Research collaborations between academics and students introduce a number of complex issues for those interested in exploring ways to promote genuine collaboration, rather than positioning students as the standard appendices to existing academic research or as research subjects. In particular, there are issues within academic-student collaborations that would not need to be taken into consideration with academic to academic (or peer) partnerships, for example, the dynamics of a profoundly noticeable power relationship and inexperience as opposed to proven research capabilities. This chapter examines challenges and satisfactions that were experienced through the collaborative work between a lecturer and undergraduate students engaged in writing a chapter for a core undergraduate course. These experiences are then analysed, providing a theoretical framework through which to look at ways to address key challenges faced during the collaborative process in order to nurture successes for future collaborations. Benefits such as development of a research culture as motivation to engage with further projects at the tertiary level are discussed further in this chapter.
