- Description
- In late sixteenth-century Italy, Jesuit colleges and novitiates were full of young men wanting to join the missionary enterprise in the East. Thousands of their letters of petition, addressed to the superior general and known as the Litterae Indipetae, survive in the Jesuit archive in Rome. This essay takes as its focus three successful petitioners from the Italian province selected for the China mission at the turn of the seventeenth century. It analyzes the petitions of this small group of candidates prior to their embarkation for the East, providing a window onto a lesser-known aspect of the famous story of the Jesuit China mission.
