- Description
- The early or classical sociologists discussed in this chapter lived in a world of massive social change, a world that had been turned upside down by the onset of the Industrial Revolution. The early sociologists wanted to know why social change occurred, and how it impacted on social life. You may ask why we should study the classical theorists of sociology, of people from a different era than our own. They too were struggling with a period of massive social upheaval and the changing relationships between individuals and their social world. Some of their insights are sti ll relevant today, and have influenced contemporary sociological theories. Therefore, it is necessary to appreciate the origins of sociological theory in order to provide a basis for greater understandings of our own social world. We cover only a selection of key theorists; we acknowledge that this is not an exhaustive list. In providing this overview, rather than offering an in-depth evaluation, we highlight some of the key ideas of each theorist. Our aim is to help you gain an awareness of the range of foundational sociological theories you are likely to encounter in the wider literature.
