- This paper explores a neglected area of new product development research: New Retail Concept Development (NRCD), and presents a model and taxonomy of NRCD featuring seven categories. An initial test of the taxonomy was conducted using 35 new retail concepts. The findings show support for the typology as proposed. Managerial implications include the ability of the typology to capture the scale, complexity and nuances of most, if not all, new retail concepts, and also the identification that each of the seven categories requires its own idiosyncratic strategic planning checklist.
