- In view of the strong association between coronary pathophysiology and environmental factors in man, it is highly desirable to have knowledge of the normal range of coronary haemodynamics that occurs during everyday activity. With such data, hypotheses may be formulated concerning not only the control of the normal coronary circulation, but also mechanisms underlying clinical pathophysiological states. Since methods are not available for such studies in man, the present study was undertaken using the baboon as the experimental model. This animal is particularly suited for such experiments, in view of his close evolutionary relationship with man, his similar anatomical and behavioural characteristics and his frequent adoption of the upright posture. Accordingly, the present study was undertaken to define changes in aortic blood pressure, heart rate and coronary blood flow during sleep, exercise, eating, and emotionally stressful situations. The experiments were carried out using 4 adult male baboons ranging free in a large outdoor enclosure at DEAN FRANKLIN's laboratory at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, La Jolla, California. Data were recorded continuously over periods of 48 hours from chronically implanted solid state pressure gauges, and Doppler ultrasonic flow transducers mounted on the left circumflex coronary artery, using a telemetry system developed in the laboratory. The advantages and limitations of these instruments, and a full description of the circuitry, has recently been published in detail.
