Description: Complete excision of the adrenal glands in the rabbit is rendered difficult by the adherence of the right adrenal to the posterior aspect of the inferior vena cava, close to the entrance of the right renal vein. In studies related to the function of the adrenal medullary hormones complete excision of the glands is preferable to simple denervation and other indirect methods of medullary abulation, since surviving medullary tissue remains sensitive to humoral agents such as glucagon, histamine, bradykinin and angiotensin. This paper describes a technique for surgical removal of the adrenal glands in the rabbit and subsequent maintenance of the animals as "chronic" preperations.
