- This chapter gives the current picture of how calcium release channels (ryanodine receptors, RyRs) in the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) are regulated by intracellular ligands. The review focuses on Ca²⁺ , Mg²⁺ , and ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which are key regulators of the RyR. DifferentRyR isoforms are expressed in skeletal and cardiac muscle. These isoforms are modulated differently by Ca²⁺ , Mg²⁺, and ATP, leading to the different characteristics of E–C coupling in the two muscle types.
