- Previous research in subjective well-being has been conducted largely in Western countries with little research being conducted in an Eastern setting. The development of consumer well being seems to contradict the growth in excessive or materialistic consumption and as such expansion of work beyond western boundaries is important. This study examined the effects of consumers’ materialistic tendencies, the degree of religiosity and status consumption on subjective well-being (SWB). The results indicate that materialism negatively affects SWB, however religiosity and status consumption have positive effects on SWB.
