- Description
- This article presents how I undertook the French translation of Dymphna Cusack’s second novel, Southern Steel, published in 1953 (Constable, London). I consider each translation as a specific project that requires appropriate strategies, based on a close analysis of the parameters involved in the creation and reception of the original text: the intentions of the author, the time of production, the language and the culture of the time. After examining these conditions as well as the dominant functions of the novel, I explain what type of translation I decided to undertake, more than fifty years later. I also examine the language used in Southern Steel, the different variations or registers present in the text, in order to develop adequate translation strategies. Finally, I consider the cultural challenges involved, that is to say the difficulties to import cultural traits, taking some examples from the novel.
