- Description
- There is a strong desire for environmental sustainability of the mining industry, to continue to realise the economic benefits and provide ongoing productive land use for the community. The strengthening of governance of mining through legislation, planning and compliance is needed to realise this aim. Considerable progress has been made in the implementation of robust governance of the mining industry, and strides are being made in developing nations as well. The provision of bonding requirements for rehabilitation provides important insurance to ensure the rehabilitation of mined lands. Undertaking to deal with mining legacies is also progressing, though understanding the scope of the problem by abandoned mine inventories and the development of frameworks to assess, prioritise and manage risks at these sites. Some governments are implementing funding mechanisms, such as mining levies, to provide the funding needed to address mining legacies.
