- Description
- Regions Matter is a statistically representative survey conducted across Australia, by the Institute for Regional Futures at the University of Newcastle. For this research, 3,200 people were surveyed via telephone. Participants were mostly from across regional Australia. 700, people from capital cities were also surveyed, allowing comparison of country and city perspectives. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their aspirations, communities, local economies, health, wellbeing, and government. Specific regions were ‘oversampled’, allowing statistically significant findings of people’s views in specific regional communities. This paper describes key findings from a survey of around 800 Hunter residents, with local views compared to those in other regional areas and metropolitan areas. The survey design allows comparisons to be made inside the Hunter. To ensure the analysis is statistically robust, we have broken the Hunter into two regions: the Upper Hunter, comprising the local government areas of Singleton, Muswellbrook, Dungog and Upper Hunter Shire; and the Lower Hunter, comprising Maitland, Cessnock, Port Stephens, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Survey data has also been weighted by age, gender and region to ensure statistical validity. This paper focuses on: Issues of future change and resilience, Economic opportunity, How Hunter residents feel about themselves, their communities, and their environment and Implications for decision-makers and stakeholders.
