- Description
- There are few people in Australia today without a mobile phone, or an opinion about them. It has become one of the most common objects that we carry on our person: it's always phone, wallet and then like anything else? Nup.' (RP03, 2006: i/v) For this reason, the mobile phone is uniquely positioned as a tool for framing and grounding the user's identity and sense of personal agency. The mobile phone imparts feelings of independence, offering a sense of individual freedom, fluidity and mobility. However, our consent to to its constant presence delivers a paradox. We are also very connected and relentlessly contactable. This paper explores how the mobile phone affects, and is affected by, our personal sense of identity.
