- Description
- The immersion corrosion of mild steels, under low dissolved oxygen conditions in stagnant or low flow fresh waters at elevated temperatures, is of interest to a number of industries. Very few results are available and understanding of the variables involved is limited. Herein results are reported for an exposure trial conducted over 12 months under DO concentrations of 2mg/L at 70°C for coupons composed of steels with a range of carbon contents. Corrosion loss was determined from mass loss for recoveries at approximately 2 weeks intervals. Throughout the experiment there was no discernible difference in corrosion loss between the three different carbon contents. The corrosion losses for the coupons exposed to similar DO concentrations exhibited a bi-modal characteristic as a function of time, consistent with other results under low DO conditions. Unexpectedly, the corrosion products formed on the steel coupons were almost entirely black magnetite. Also, the inside of the exposure container and other fittings were coated with a mixture of brown-red hematite and goethite. Further, there were unusually large areas of localized corrosion around the fixing bolt and also around identification holes. These observations are considered to be the direct or indirect result of using commercial sodium hydrogen sulphite (NaHSO³) as the deoxider. The implications are discussed.
