Description: What this paper presents is the outline of a problem and a suggestion about where we might look for a solution. I will propose a set of properties of items which might loosely be called "appositional", indicate why these properties cause grief for all theories of syntax, and suggest that we will need to look for a possible escape route outside sentence grammar altogether, in the realm of discourse structure.
