- Description
- The use of simulation in health professional education has evolved at an unprecedented pace. However, similar to many other teaching and learning innovations, the evidence base for simulation has not kept up with its rapid expansion and utilisation. Multimillion-dollar investments in infrastructure and simulation equipment have been made, too often with limited evidence of effectiveness or utility. There is some evidence suggesting that exposure to simulation, irrespective of the level of fidelity and modalities in use, is likely to have a positive impact on learner satisfaction and confidence. There is also increasing research claiming that simulation improves learners' knowledge, clinical reasoning, communication and teamwork skills, although these remain somewhat contested areas. While there has undoubtedly been an increase in the quality and amount of simulation research in recent years, important questions of transferability to practice and improved patient outcomes are yet to be convincingly addressed. This chapter outlines and critiques the current evidence base for the use of simulation as a teaching and learning strategy for health professional students. Simulation best practice is discussed and recommendations for future research are offered.
