However, when used in combination, clinically relevant concentrations of polymyxin B and SERMs displayed synergistic killing against the polymyxin-resistant P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and A. baumannii isolates as demonstrated by a ≥2–3 log10 decrease in bacterial count (CFU/ml) after 24 hours. The combination of polymyxin B with toremifene demonstrated very potent antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa biofilms in an artificial sputum media assay. Moreover, polymyxin B combined with toremifene synergistically induced cytosolic green fluorescence protein release, cytoplasmic membrane depolarization, permeabilizing activity in a nitrocefin assay, and an increase of cellular reactive oxygen species from P. aeruginosa cells. In addition, scanning and transmission electron micrographs showed that polymyxin B in combination with toremifene causes distinctive damage to the outer membrane of P. aeruginosa cells, compared with treatments with each compound per se. In conclusion, the combination of polymyxin B and SERMs illustrated a synergistic activity against XDR Gram-negative pathogens, including highly polymyxin-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates, and represents a novel combination therapy strategy for the treatment of infections because of problematic XDR Gram-negative pathogens.]]> Wed 15 Dec 2021 16:08:26 AEDT ]]> Feasibility of targeting Hispanic fathers and children in an obesity intervention: Papás Saludables Niños Saludables https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:47185 Healthy Dads Healthy Kids was the first obesity prevention intervention targeting fathers and demonstrated weight loss among fathers and behavior change among fathers and children in Australia. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of a culturally adapted version of the program for Hispanic families, Papás Saludables Niños Saludables. Methods: A randomized waitlist controlled trial with a process evaluation was conducted to assess the feasibility of Papás Saludables Niños Saludables(NCT03532048). Fathers, their partner (mother), and one to three children were enrolled. A priori feasibility criteria were: (1) recruit 40 Hispanic fathers and their families in ≤4 months; (2) retain 80% of participants for pre- and postassessments; (3) maintain ≥70% attendance to the 10 sessions; (4) obtain 80% “excellent” or “good” satisfaction from participants; and (5) collect anthropometric and behavioral data on ≥75% of participants at baseline and follow-up. Results: The study enrolled 90% (n = 36) of the goal from one local pediatric clinic between May and August 2018; retained 75% of participants for postassessment; maintained 72% attendance among those who started the program; and achieved 100% “excellent/good” satisfaction ratings among the participating fathers and mothers. One hundred percent of participants had most anthropometric and behavioral data at baseline and 72% at follow-up. Conclusions: With oversampling and improvements in the recruitment strategies, Papás Saludables Niños Saludables is feasible for a randomized controlled clinical trial to address whether a father-targeted lifestyle program is efficacious among low-income Hispanic men and their children.]]> Wed 14 Dec 2022 16:03:05 AEDT ]]> Fatherhood following treatment for testicular cancer: a systematic review and meta-analyses https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:47175 I2 statistic. To better understand defluoridation processes and replicate the situation in the field, column tests were conducted. Results indicate that presence of neither Ba2+ nor Cd2+ has significant impact on fluoride retention when compared with the blank (no metals) because the relative concentration values (F/Fo) as well as the transport parameters like retardation factor (Rc) and distribution coefficient (Kd) are almost the same. PHREEQC, a geochemical software, was then applied to simulate the column test processes (i.e., 1D reactive/transport processes) based on the mechanism of CaF₂ precipitation followed after calcium dissolution. As indicated in the batch reactor test, addition of Cd2+ may inhibit calcite dissolution; therefore, a new phase "CalciteSupp" (a phase representing the suppressed solubility of calcite) was defined. Modeling results exhibit good predictions of observed data, and the log_k solubility of the hypothetical "CalciteSupp" equilibrium phase implies the suppression of calcite dissolution in the metal samples. Moreover, saturation indices obtained by modeling indicate the precipitation of CdCO₃ and BaCO₃, revealing that addition of metals may influence fluoride removal at some point during the process, but has no big impact on overall defluoridation. The initial development of the PHREEQC geochemical model presented shows potential in being able to be used as a predictive tool for the design of fluoride remediation strategies, such as permeable reactive barriers, and transport parameters obtained on the basis of the column tests, and CXTFIT (a computer program for evaluating and estimating transport parameters) modeling can be applied in practical design.]]> Wed 05 Dec 2018 12:10:50 AEDT ]]> Decolonizing Knowledge Upstream: New Ways to Deconstruct and Fight Disinformation in an Era of COVID-19, Extreme Digital Transformation, and Climate Emergency https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:52182 Wed 04 Oct 2023 11:03:54 AEDT ]]> Bowel Preparation and Oral Antibiotic Agents for Selective Decontamination in Colorectal Surgery: Current Practice, Perspectives, and Trends in Australia and New Zealand, 2019-2020 https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:49062 Wed 03 May 2023 15:53:54 AEST ]]> Air pollution increases depression risk among young women: possible natural world resiliencies https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:38560 Wed 02 Aug 2023 11:51:56 AEST ]]> Clinical Decision Making in the Management of Breast Cancer Diagnosed During Pregnancy: A Review and Case Series Analysis https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:46746 Tue 29 Nov 2022 15:18:50 AEDT ]]> Genetics and other risk factors for past concussions in active-duty soldiers https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:33133 Tue 28 Aug 2018 13:03:47 AEST ]]> Systematic review of genetic risk factors for sustaining a mild traumatic brain injury https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:33129 Tue 28 Aug 2018 12:56:53 AEST ]]> Resting state electroencephalography and sport-related concussion: a systematic review https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:42438 Tue 23 Aug 2022 10:26:29 AEST ]]> Oculomotor cognitive control abnormalities in Australian rules football players with a history of concussion https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:43320 Tue 21 Mar 2023 18:41:26 AEDT ]]> Cocrystals of apixaban with improved solubility and permeability: Formulation, physicochemical characterization, pharmacokinetic evaluation, and computational studies https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:46309 Tue 15 Nov 2022 10:28:48 AEDT ]]> Energetic dysfunction is mediated by mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and precedes structural remodeling in metabolic heart disease https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:48338 per se, is sufficient to cause contractile dysfunction in MHD.]]> Tue 14 Mar 2023 17:22:37 AEDT ]]> An Australian Biobank Certification Scheme: A Study of Economic Costs to Participating Biobanks https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:43169 Tue 13 Sep 2022 16:03:25 AEST ]]> Oxidative Stress Dysregulates Protein Homeostasis within the Male Germ Line https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:43152 Tue 13 Sep 2022 15:28:32 AEST ]]> Sex Differences in Disease Profiles, Management, and Outcomes Among People with Atrial Fibrillation After Ischemic Stroke: Aggregated and Individual Participant Data Meta-Analyses https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:54206 Tue 13 Feb 2024 11:43:19 AEDT ]]> Psychological Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh: Analysis of a Cross-Sectional Survey https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:44302 Tue 11 Oct 2022 15:58:51 AEDT ]]> Serological evidence of rickettsia, orientia, and coxiella in domestic animals from Bhutan: preliminary findings https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:34754 Tue 01 Oct 2019 12:14:26 AEST ]]> Late Afternoon Vigorous Exercise Increases Postmeal but Not Overnight Hypoglycemia in Adults with Type 1 Diabetes Managed with Automated Insulin Delivery https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:51324 1 week. A standardized meal was eaten at ∼20:40. Hypoglycemic events were defined as a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) reading <70 mg/dL for ≥15 min. Four-hour postevening meal and overnight (00:00-06:00) CGM metrics for exercise were compared with the prior nonexercise day. Results: There was no severe hypoglycemia. Between 00:00 and 06:00, the proportion of nights with hypoglycemia did not differ postexercise versus control for HIE (18% vs. 11%; P = 0.688), RE (4% vs. 14%; P = 0.375), and MIE (7% vs. 14%; P = 0.625). Time in range (TIR) (70-180 mg/dL), >75% for all nights, did not differ between exercise conditions and control. Hypoglycemia episodes postmeal after exercise versus control did not differ for HIE (22% vs. 7%; P = 0.219) and MIE (10% vs. 14%; P > 0.999), but were greater post-RE (39% vs. 10%; P = 0.012). Conclusions: Overnight TIR was excellent with AID without increased hypoglycemia postexercise between 00:00 and 06:00 compared with nonexercise days. The intervention focused on capacity building and policy implementation within various early childhood settings. This paper reports on the process and impact evaluation of this trial and the lessons learned from this complex community intervention. Methods: Process data was collected throughout and audits capturing nutrition and physical activity-related environments and practices were completed postintervention by directors of Long Day Care (LDC) centers (n = 10) and preschools (n = 41) in intervention and comparison (n = 161 LDC and n = 347 preschool) groups. Results: The environmental audits demonstrated positive impacts in both settings on policy, nutrition, physical activity opportunities, and staff capacity and practices, although results varied across settings and were more substantial in the preschool settings. Important lessons were learned in relation to implementation of such community-based interventions, including the significant barriers to implementing health-promotion interventions in early childhood settings, lack of engagement of for-profit LDC centers in the evaluation, and an inability to attribute direct intervention impacts when the intervention components were delivered as part of a health-promotion package integrated with other programs. Conclusions: These results provide confidence that obesity prevention interventions in children's settings can be effective; however, significant efforts must be directed toward developing context-specific strategies that invest in policies, capacity building, staff support, and parent engagement. There is a need for further inclusion of curriculum related to transgender, gender diverse, and intersex people.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:33:22 AEDT ]]> Effectiveness of a predictive algorithm in the prevention of exercise-induced hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetes https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:29188 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:31:38 AEDT ]]> Assessing the presence and severity of constipation with plain radiographs in constipated palliative care patients https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:30060 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:31:19 AEDT ]]> Systematic review of multivariable prognostic models for mild traumatic brain injury https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:28122 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:24:59 AEDT ]]> The population burden of chronic symptoms that substantially predate the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:28133 underestimate services' benefits. Observational symptom prevalence studies reported in hospice/palliative care to date have not accounted for people with long-term refractory symptoms, potentially systematically overestimating symptoms attributed to life-limiting illnesses. Cross-sectional community prevalence rates of key chronic refractory symptoms largely unrelated to their life-limiting illness reflect the likely prevalence on referral to hospice/palliative care: fatigue (up to 35%); pain (12%–31%); pain with neuropathic characteristics (9%); constipation (2%–29%); dyspnea (4%–9%); cognitive impairment (>10% of people >65 years old; >30% of people >85 years old); anxiety (4%); and depression (lifetime incidence 2%–15%; one year prevalence 3%). Prospective research is needed to establish (1) the prevalence and severity of chronic symptoms that pre-date the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness in people referred to hospice/palliative care services, comparing this to whole-of-population estimates; and (2) whether this group is disproportionately represented in people with refractory symptoms.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:24:54 AEDT ]]> Age-specific risk factors for sporadic campylobacter infection in regional Australia https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:4474 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:19:19 AEDT ]]> Be positive be healthe: development and implementation of a targeted e-health weight loss program for young women https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:23654 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:17:53 AEDT ]]> Evaluation of impact on health-related quality of life and cost effectiveness of traditional chinese medicine: a systematic review of randomized clinical trials https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:23515 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:17:17 AEDT ]]> Olanzapine in the management of difficult to control nausea and vomiting in a palliative care population: a case series https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:24383 Sat 24 Mar 2018 07:16:18 AEDT ]]> Can spermatozoa respond to changes in their redox status with the selective activation of gene transcription?
