This paper is also indebted to Davi A Johnson's 'Managing Mr. Monk' (2008) for its discussion of mental illness as attaining 'social value' through becoming a resource with economic and ethical value, as do the conditions of the fictional characters explored in this article. Schalk's work on disability is here expanded to a more specific discussion of mental illness on television, while Johnson's work is updated to discuss whether the newer characterisations reflect the same rhetorical positioning as Monk (USA, USA Network, 2002-2009), one of the earliest texts celebrated for featuring a lead, sympathetic character clearly and explicitly identified with a mental health condition. Of the five lead characters examined here, three are figured as responsible for their symptoms because they have chosen not to take medication or withdraw from their medication. It is concurrently presented that if they do take medication, it dampens their abilities to perform valuable work in the community, thus removing their use value within the world of the series.]]> Thu 25 Jun 2020 15:14:41 AEST ]]> Evaluation of Brain-Body Health in Individuals with Common Neuropsychiatric Disorders https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:51180 Thu 24 Aug 2023 14:30:56 AEST ]]> An examination of factors associated with tobacco smoking amongst patients presenting with deliberate self-poisoning https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:38573 Thu 18 Nov 2021 12:27:27 AEDT ]]> Addressing the health risk behaviours of people with a mental illness: a collaborative approach? https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:36626 Thu 18 Jun 2020 17:00:03 AEST ]]> Implementation of the Mental Health Act in Ghana: a study of barriers and enablers using a mixed-method approach https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:55166 Thu 18 Apr 2024 16:32:05 AEST ]]> Preventive care for physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption: a cross-sectional survey of family carer expectations of health service delivery for people with a mental health condition https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:38639 Thu 14 Mar 2024 12:29:12 AEDT ]]> Physical activity and prevention of mental health complications: An umbrella review https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:55127 Thu 11 Apr 2024 11:14:46 AEST ]]> Consumers at the centre: interprofessional solutions for meeting mental health consumers' physical health needs https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:35663 Thu 03 Oct 2019 13:56:54 AEST ]]> Visibly Hidden in Suva: St Giles https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:50316 Thu 03 Aug 2023 09:41:31 AEST ]]> Resilience, apps and reluctant individualism: technologies of self in the neoliberal academy https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:31671 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:44:53 AEDT ]]> The workplace and nurses with a mental illness https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:7278 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:42:11 AEDT ]]> Labor's disability employment services: employment solutions for people with mental illness or tinkering around the edges? https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:8796 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:41:09 AEDT ]]> Court outcomes for clients referred to a community mental health court liaison service https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:8054 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:35:04 AEDT ]]> Fathers with mental illness: implications for clinicians and health services https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:15797 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:19:40 AEDT ]]> The labour market experience of people with mental illness - a qualitative survey https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:12085 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:13:30 AEDT ]]> Preliminary outcomes from an individualised supported education programme delivered by a community mental health service https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:11377 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:11:55 AEDT ]]> The labour market experience of people with mental health disorders in Australia https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:12032 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:08:34 AEDT ]]> Inpatient aggression by mentally ill offenders: a retrospective case-control study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:20827 N = 82), while controls comprised the next available admission, matched for age and gender (N = 82). This analysis is focused on the comparison of the use of stereotypes in Louth v Diprose and Williams v Maalouf. Each case allows vastly different outcomes for the neuro divergent female parties, but both cases reinforce prejudicial stereotypes. The article concludes with a discussion of how a myopic focus on a singular category of identity can hinder the creation of decisions that are more mindful of intersectional realities.]]> Fri 05 Jul 2019 12:13:19 AEST ]]> The impact of Mental Health Nurse Consultants on the care of general hospital patients experiencing concurrent mental health conditions: An integrative literature review https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:50745 Fri 04 Aug 2023 08:33:02 AEST ]]> Efficacy of a universal smoking cessation intervention initiated in inpatient psychiatry and continued post-discharge: a randomised controlled trial https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:31395 N = 754) were randomised to receive either usual care (n = 375) or an intervention comprising a brief mot ivational interview and self-help material while in hospital, followed by a 4-month pharmacological and psychosocial intervention (n = 379) upon discharge. Primary outcomes assessed at 6 and 12 months post-discharge were 7-day point prevalence and 1-month prolonged smoking abstinence. A number of secondary smoking-related outcomes were also assessed. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on psychiatric diagnosis, baseline readiness to quit and nicotine dependence. Results: Seven-day point prevalence abstinence was higher for intervention participants (15.8%) than controls (9.3%) at 6 months post-discharge (odds ratio = 1.07, p = 0.04), but not at 12 months (13.4% and 10.0%, respectively; odds ratio = 1.03, p = 0.25). Significant intervention effects were not found on measures of prolonged abstinence at either 6 or 12 months post-discharge. Differential intervention effects for the primary outcomes were not detected for any subgroups. At both 6 and 12 months post-discharge, intervention group participants were significantly more likely to smoke fewer cigarettes per day, have reduced cigarette consumption by 3/450% and to have made at least one quit attempt, relative to controls. Conclusions: Universal smoking cessation treatment initiated in inpatient psychiatry and continued post-discharge was efficacious in increasing 7-day point prevalence smoking cessation rates and related quitting behaviours at 6 months post-discharge, with sustained effects on quitting behaviour at 12 months. Further research is required to identify strategies for achieving longer term smoking cessation.]]> Fri 03 Dec 2021 10:34:17 AEDT ]]> Translating evidence-based practice for managing comorbid substance use and mental illness using a multimodal training package https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/uon:37833 Fri 01 Apr 2022 09:22:54 AEDT ]]>
